When Awolowo Boldly Asked Nigeria’s Richest Ijebu Man for an Education Loan
In March 1943, Obafemi Awolowo wrote to Chief Timothy Adeola Odutola, then Nigeria’s wealthiest Ijebu businessman, seeking a £1,400 interest-free loan to study law in England. He offered only his good faith and intellect as collateral. Awolowo outlined his ambition to become a lawyer, journalist, and politician. He proposed a detailed 12-year repayment plan, named every risk, and invited Odutola to share in a project aimed at lifting Nigeria. Odutola declined, but a year later Awolowo sailed to England. He qualified as a barrister in 1946 and rose to become Premier of the Western Region by 1954. He never got the loan, yet went on to fund scholarships for hundreds of undergraduates. This episode remains a lesson in vision, integrity, and resilience. It shows how transparency and self-belief can manufacture opportunity—and how a “no” can redirect us to greater heights.
