How My UK Flatmates Taught Me the Power of Partnership
In my first year in the UK, I shared a large flat with six people from around the world. We each had our own room and mostly kept to ourselves. But two young Polish flatmates changed how I saw relationships. They were just 19, working part-time jobs to pay the bills. Whenever expenses got tight, they never spoke as individuals. They always said, “We are short this month,” or “We are finding extra shifts.” It was never about who owed what. It was always “we.” Later, I saw the same mindset with a Spanish flatmate and his partner from India. They shared travel costs, daily rides, and chores based on each other’s strengths. No scorekeeping. No power games. These experiences taught me that strong relationships aren’t about age or money. They stem from a shared mindset. When two people truly see themselves as a team, they ask, “How do we make this work?” instead of “What can I get?”
