Why Cardinal Okpaleke Stepped Back from Tansian University in 2024

Why Cardinal Okpaleke Stepped Back from Tansian University in 2024

Controversy over Tansian University’s governance escalated after founder Msgr. John Bosco Akam died in 2021. In a 2024 meeting with the National Universities Commission in Abuja, Fr. Lawrence Nwankwo clarified why Cardinal Francis Okpaleke intervened — not as an owner, but to safeguard the late founder’s legacy. Fr. Nwankwo explained that the Catholic Diocese of Ekwulobia took responsibility because Msgr. Akam was a diocesan priest. As Chancellor, he helped with probate, inventory and administrative changes when Msgr. Akam’s will needed execution. Some institutions had clear instructions in the will, but unresolved matters at the university required the Bishop’s name on paperwork for continuity. Tensions later arose over the removal of Prof. Theresa Obiekezie as Pro-Chancellor. Cardinal Okpaleke objected to the process and chose to resign rather than support what he saw as an unfair decision. After further actions at the Board of Trustees meeting, he withdrew completely.

What do you think prompted Cardinal Okpaleke to intervene at Tansian University if he wasn't an owner or direct stakeholder?

Do we know what prompted that intervention despite his lack of formal role at the university?

It's interesting that the intervention came three years after Msgr. Akam's passing, which suggests deeper governance issues at the university.

I'm not convinced a single Abuja meeting solves entrenched governance gaps when actual staff and students weren't consulted.

Universities facing similar leadership vacuums should prioritize transparent succession plans and involve academic councils in decision-making early.
