First Lady Inaugurates Community Food Bank in Borno to Tackle Malnutrition

First Lady Inaugurates Community Food Bank in Borno to Tackle Malnutrition

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, inaugurated the North-East arm of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Maiduguri. The initiative targets malnourished children under six, pregnant and nursing mothers, orphans and economically disadvantaged households. Over N66 billion has been pledged by the Federal Government, corporate partners and private donors. The Dangote Foundation committed N20 billion in kind support, NNPC provided N10 billion, and the Social Action Fund will contribute N17 billion. Community food banks will be set up in all 774 local government areas and linked to primary healthcare centres under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund. Nutritious, locally sourced food will reach beneficiaries through a transparent voucher system. Beyond immediate relief, the programme is expected to strengthen local food systems, boost maternal and child health outcomes and create jobs across the supply chain. Na our mama be dis o. A national network of food banks across 774 LGs will give vulnerable Nigerians better access to food. Those who frown at this programme should read beyond the headlines.
