Prosecutor’s Personal Attack Misfires as Diezani Wraps Up London Bribery Hearing

Lead prosecutor Alexandra Healy KC faced criticism for suggesting that former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke lied under oath during the final day of her London trial testimony. Alison-Madueke spent nine days in court denying bribery charges, explaining that luxury items bought by Igho Sanomi were either refunded by NNPC for official expenses or by her family due to banking restrictions abroad. Key defence victories emerged when a letter from Senator Ifeanyi Ubah confirmed she refused to award contracts, and the prosecution failed to prove that donations from Benedict Peters to her brother’s ministry influenced oil contracts. Several prosecution witnesses contradicted the case, and no evidence was offered to show the minister lied under oath, leaving her defence strongly positioned.
