EFCC Seizes ₦4bn in Gold Bars at Kano Airport, Links Shipment to Ex-Zamfara Governor

Operatives of the EFCC intercepted gold bars valued at about ₦4 billion in 15 suitcases at Aminu Kano International Airport. The consignment was bound for Saudi Arabia when officers noticed the suspicious cargo and alerted the anti-graft agency. Three suspects, including an airport security officer, confessed to running a cartel involved in illegal mining across Zamfara, Kaduna and Kebbi States. Investigators say the shipment is tied to former Zamfara State governor Abdul Aziz Yari Abubakar. An associate from the ADC reportedly tried to bribe EFCC officials for the gold’s release but was turned away. Senator Yari has not responded to repeated calls and messages seeking his reaction.

What gaps in our airport screening allowed 15 suitcases of gold bars worth ₦4bn to get that far uninspected?

True talk, the airport checks need major overhaul so gold can't slip through again.

It seems unusual that just one routine check uncovered such high-value cargo; perhaps more thorough inspections are needed regularly.

It's easy to hail this seizure as a win, but without addressing underlying corruption, such busts will stay reactive rather than preventive.

Customs and EFCC should install advanced scanning tech and cross-check passenger manifests to detect hidden cargo before departure.
