Why Bauchi APC Must Prioritize Credibility Over Elite Consensus
Local politics in Bauchi has shown that elite imposition rarely succeeds. The party’s consensus process must not sacrifice grassroots legitimacy for a quick agreement among elites. Past elections illustrate this point. In 2007 and 2015, candidates chosen through behind-the-scenes deals lost because voters saw them as imposed. Winning the internal contest will count for little if the consensus candidate lacks broad support. Many Bauchi APC elites have switched parties or sidelined loyalists. Only Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar combines consistency with genuine grassroots reach. Rewarding proven loyalists can unite members and prevent outsiders from derailing the process. As the next election nears, those selecting the consensus candidate must put Bauchi’s interests first. Choosing a credible, widely accepted contender will strengthen the party’s chances in the general election.
