Over Half of Nigerian States See Inflation Surge Above 30% Despite National Dip

Nigeria’s headline inflation eased marginally from 15.93% in May to 15.91% in June. Yet 20 of 37 states, including the FCT, recorded annual rates above 30%. Niger led with 42.23%, followed by Kogi at 41.59% and Abuja at 39.91%. Imo had the lowest rate at 19.47%, still outpacing the national average. Food inflation remains a major worry. Kogi recorded 53.02% annual food inflation, while Katsina had the lowest at 19.15%. Month-on-month, headline inflation jumped by 11.65% in Niger but fell by 6.48% in Bayelsa. Experts warn that insecurity, high transport costs and supply disruptions are fuelling price rises. They urge structural reforms to boost food production, improve logistics and ease the cost-of-living crisis.
