The Lament of an Exiled King

The Lament of an Exiled King

Like a groom longing for his bride in a distant land, I yearn to return to my kingdom. Betrayed by those I trusted, I escaped by the skin of my teeth. Strangers now occupy my palace. They mock our customs and desecrate the sacred stools of my ancestors. Oh Lord of all lands, rescue your consecrated people. Confound these invaders and ignite in my people a spirit of rebellion. Let them not rest until I reclaim my throne and your name is glorified.

The imagery is striking, but I wonder if the poem overuses grandiosity at the expense of genuine emotion.

I feel the betrayal theme is clear, yet the plea to the Lord feels a bit overly dramatic instead of personal.

Perhaps trimming some of the heavy imagery could sharpen the emotional impact and give the king's voice more authenticity.
