Panic as Suspected Bandits’ Letter Shuts Schools Across Osun; Adeleke and Police Speak Out
A letter allegedly dropped by suspected bandits at a public school in Ikirun sparked panic across several towns in Osun State. Parents rushed to collect their children as schools in Ikirun, Obaagun, Iree, Eripa, Otan-Ayegbaju and Ila-Orangun closed early. Some private schools in Osogbo also sent pupils home after the news spread. An executive at the Nigerian Ports Authority warned that armoured vehicles withdrawn from the state over a year ago could weaken security against criminal attacks. Governor Ademola Adeleke’s office responded that the vehicles inherited in poor condition have since been rehabilitated and promised a new security plan to protect lives and property. The Osun State Police Command described the reports of a bandit invasion as false and misleading. It urged residents to verify security alerts through official channels and warned that anyone spreading unverified information could face prosecution. The governor outlined ongoing security consultations with community hunters, Amotekun, traditional rulers and service commanders. He called on citizens to stay vigilant, report suspicious activity, and assured them that all layers of the state’s security architecture are on high alert.
