A 29-year-old man in Edo State has voluntarily renounced his cult membership and handed over a Beretta pistol to the State Security Corps. The handover came after the Esan West LGA chairman raised a security alert about strange noises near a school. Zonal Commander Joel Aidamebor said the chairman and the Divisional Police Officer received the repentant young man as a “voluntarily surrendered cultist.” The individual, who identifies as an upcoming musician, cited the dangers of cultism and a recent warning by Governor Monday Okpebholo as reasons for his decision. Security officials hope this act of surrender will encourage others in criminal groups to follow suit and seek a fresh start.

Do we know if a personal event or outside pressure prompted his decision to surrender the weapon?

It's interesting that the surrender only happened after a security alert near a school, not earlier.

I doubt handing over one pistol really solves deeper safety issues in the community, though it's a start.

Local leaders should organize regular talks in schools to address campus safety and spot warning signs early.
