Banire: Nigeria’s Growth Stalled by Political Rivalry and Policy U-turns
Dr. Muiz Banire warned that Nigeria’s democratic progress will remain stunted while leaders prioritise ego and abandon their predecessors’ projects. He argued that governance should be a continuous process anchored on institutions rather than personal ambition. Addressing a colloquium in honour of the late Adele Adeniji-Adele, Banire lamented the habit of scrapping viable policies and programmes whenever a new administration takes office. He said this culture of discontinuity wastes resources, slows development and undermines public trust. Banire also criticised transactional politics and godfatherism for sidelining merit, weakening leadership development and excluding youth from meaningful decision-making. He pointed to the UK’s emphasis on local councils, party structures and student unions as models for civic participation. He called for renewed focus on institution-building, accountability, grassroots engagement and structured mentorship to ensure sustainable reforms. The event celebrated Adeniji-Adele’s legacy in Lagos politics and his lasting impact on the community.
