Colón was once one of boxing’s brightest junior middleweight prospects, with a 16-0 professional record and 13 knockouts. During his fight against Terrel Williams in Fairfax, Virginia, he suffered repeated blows to the back of the head and was later diagnosed with a subdural hematoma that required emergency surgery. He spent 221 days in a coma and never regained the ability to walk or talk. His case prompted the World Boxing Council to introduce the Prichard Colón Rule in 2016, requiring zero tolerance for blows to the back of a boxer’s head.
