Inside Umo Eno’s ₦7.38bn Plan to Boost Women’s Enterprises in Akwa Ibom

Inside Umo Eno’s ₦7.38bn Plan to Boost Women’s Enterprises in Akwa Ibom

Governor Umo Eno has launched a ₦7.38 billion cooperative support fund for women across all 369 wards of Akwa Ibom. Each ward will receive ₦20 million through registered cooperative societies to drive financial inclusion and expand grassroots businesses. The initiative uses cooperative structures and voter cards for transparent disbursement. It targets women-led micro enterprises in agriculture, food processing, retail trade and other informal sectors that often struggle to access affordable credit. This fund builds on earlier women-centred interventions under the ARISE Agenda, including modern palm-processing mills, revolving loan schemes, minibuses for female drivers and entrepreneurship training. Key stakeholders have also pledged personal contributions and public endorsement. With strict accountability measures and a focus on cooperative membership, the programme aims to strengthen household incomes, create jobs and position women as catalysts for sustainable growth in both rural and urban communities.

It's ambitious, but pouring such a big fund through cooperatives might just add another layer of bureaucracy slowing down actual support.

They should roll out training sessions on fund management and cooperative governance before disbursing cash to ensure sustainable grassroots growth.
