Federal High Court Deregisters ADC and Accord Party, Jeopardising Atiku and Adeleke’s Campaigns

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister the African Democratic Congress and the Accord Party. Justice Peter Lifu handed down the ruling on Monday in a suit brought by the National Forum of Former Legislators. The case challenged INEC’s obligation under Section 225A of the Constitution to remove parties that fail constitutional performance thresholds. Alongside ADC and the Accord Party, the court also struck off the Action Peoples Party, Action Alliance and Zenith Labour Party. Critics say the decision could weaken the electoral prospects of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.

How might deregistering ADC and Accord change the political landscape for Atiku and Adeleke's campaigns?

True, removing ADC and Accord could shake up alliances and force both campaigns to rethink their outreach strategies.

This ruling seems to give too much power to a former legislators' forum over Nigeria's electoral choices.

I'm not entirely convinced the judiciary should decide party registration; INEC might handle these issues more impartially.

Voters should monitor how INEC implements this ruling and support transparent registration processes going forward.
