LPDC Bars Withdrawal of Misconduct Petition Against SAN Ezechukwu and Colleagues

LPDC Bars Withdrawal of Misconduct Petition Against SAN Ezechukwu and Colleagues

The Legal Practitioner Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) has refused to dismiss a petition accusing Senior Advocate of Nigeria Ikechukwu Ezechukwu, Barrister Smart Ukpanah and Barrister Hope Onyekwere of professional misconduct, criminal misrepresentation, forgery and perjury. Counsel for the respondents asked to withdraw the petition after the complainant, Kingsley Aneubuna, reportedly sent a letter of withdrawal and failed to appear. The committee chair ruled that petitions cannot be withdrawn once issues are joined and must proceed on the original filings. The dispute stems from a 2018 property transaction for a terrace duplex in Abuja. The petitioner alleged she paid ₦51 million after assurances of clean title, only to discover ongoing litigation and forged agreements naming her as co-claimant without consent. The matter is adjourned to July 29, 2026 for definite hearing, when the LPDC will investigate the allegations against the legal practitioners.

It's interesting that the LPDC chose to uphold the petition despite its serious allegations of forgery and perjury.

I'm not sure keeping the petition alive helps anyone if the evidence remains unclear or won't hold up in court.

Lawyers on both sides should gather clear documentation and prepare concise responses to address each allegation methodically.
