Borno Distributes 500 Subsidised Electric Tricycles to Vulnerable Residents

Borno Distributes 500 Subsidised Electric Tricycles to Vulnerable Residents

The Borno State government has officially handed over 500 electric tricycles to vulnerable individuals in Maiduguri. Governor Babagana Zulum explained that the “Keke Napep” units were procured months earlier and are now being distributed under a new subsidy scheme. Under the flexible payment plan managed by the partnering company, beneficiaries will receive operational licences and must follow guidelines to ensure the programme’s sustainability. In addition, each of the 16,783 verified commercial riders in Maiduguri and Jere will get a N50,000 grant, bringing the total support fund to N1 billion. This initiative aims to boost economic empowerment, create jobs, ease urban transport costs, and improve access to essential services. Once riders fully refund the subsidised cost, they will have the opportunity to own their tricycles at a reduced rate.

This subsidy na good start, but set up local repair hubs and train beneficiaries on basic maintenance routines.
