Understanding Daniel 9:27: A Biblical Explanation

Daniel 9:27 speaks of the Messiah confirming God’s covenant rather than an antichrist making a treaty. In the first part, “he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week,” refers to Jesus. He inaugurated the New Covenant through his blood shed for many (Matthew 26:28). His sacrifice affirmed the promises made to the patriarchs. “In the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease” points to Christ’s crucifixion. After about three and a half years of ministry, his once-for-all offering rendered temple sacrifices obsolete (Hebrews 10:12–14). The final clause, “for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation,” links rejection of the Messiah to Jerusalem’s destruction in A.D. 70, fulfilling the prophecy until the end of the age.
