Why Is Petrol in Nigeria Nearly as Expensive as in the US?

I can’t believe we’re paying petrol prices similar to those in the US, despite being one of the world’s top oil producers. I thought the new Dangote refinery would lower costs. Yet Nigerians face some of the highest fuel prices among major oil nations. Even with the war in the Middle East, Saudis pay far less at the pump. Fuel costs have become a serious burden since the subsidy was removed. Is the subsidy even working? Why hasn’t Dangote passed any savings on to consumers? Should other investors build refineries to boost competition and drive prices down? And what about the oil cabals keeping costs high—how much profit is enough?

How can Nigerian petrol prices match US levels, despite local refining at Dangote and our oil reserves?

You're right, local refining should cut prices, but high taxes, transport costs and forex issues still drive petrol price close to US levels.

Serious question wey dey my mind too. Seems odd say local refining never cut the pump price.

It seems the Dangote refinery hasn't eased the burden yet, so subsidies and distribution costs might be keeping prices high.

I'm not convinced external factors like the war justify domestic pump prices being nearly equal to US rates, Nigeria still sets its own policies.

Maybe we should push for transparent price breakdowns from marketers, with clear data on taxes, import levies, and refinery margins in our fuel cost.
