Why Nigeria Should Extend Presidential Terms: Lessons from Lee Kuan Yew and Beyond
Nigeria’s four-year election cycle often stalls development as leaders spend more time campaigning than building. By the third year, major projects slow or stop. Look at Singapore under Lee Kuan Yew, Dubai’s monarch, Morocco’s king or President Kagame of Rwanda. They served long terms and delivered lasting results. Our short cycles make it easy to reverse progress. I propose a five-year term and an indirect electronic vote for the second term. Three delegates per ward would cast votes by mobile number. This would cut billions in election costs and keep our focus on governance. What do you think?
