NMCN’s Delay in Issuing Certificates Freezes Careers of Thousands of Nigerian Nurses

NMCN’s Delay in Issuing Certificates Freezes Careers of Thousands of Nigerian Nurses — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Since 2023, thousands of trained Nigerian nurses have met all exam and training requirements but remain uncertified. Without the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria’s approval, they cannot legally work in most hospitals or pursue opportunities abroad. The NMCN has not released certificates to graduates from nursing schools and universities nationwide. Affected nurses say they are stuck in limbo, unable to start their careers despite fulfilling every requirement. The Elegant Nurses Forum describes the situation as a “prolonged and unjustifiable delay.” It blames a leadership vacuum within the council and demands transparency and accountability. Many fear this hold-up could be an attempt to curb the mass emigration of healthcare workers, popularly called the “Japa” syndrome. So far, the NMCN has offered no public explanation for the backlog.

I doubt there's just one root cause—maybe understaffing, tech hiccups, and red tape are all slowing certificates down.

It's baffling that trained nurses who passed exams still face months-long certification hold-ups.

I'm not convinced delays automatically indicate mismanagement; resource shortages or policy changes could be slowing certificate issuance.

Nurses could form a collective platform to petition NMCN for clearer timelines and transparent status updates on certificates.
