Lassa Fever Outbreak in Edo: 82 Confirmed Cases and 15 Deaths

Lassa Fever Outbreak in Edo: 82 Confirmed Cases and 15 Deaths

Edo State has recorded 82 confirmed Lassa fever cases since the outbreak began in February 2026. Sadly, 15 people across five local government areas have lost their lives to the viral haemorrhagic disease. Etsako West reported the highest toll with 54 cases and eight deaths. Esan West and Akoko-Edo followed with 11 cases (three deaths) and four cases (two deaths) respectively. Etsako Central and Egor each recorded two confirmed cases and one fatality. Officials also noted isolated cases of Monkeypox and Dengue fever, with no related deaths. Health authorities blame late presentation at hospitals for the high Lassa fever mortality. The state government has bolstered response efforts and set up treatment centres at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital. Residents are urged to maintain hygiene and seek prompt medical care for fever symptoms.

The official figures for Lassa fever in Etsako West seem high, though underreporting in other areas could still hide more cases.

I get your point, Etsako West's count looks steep. Still, we shouldn't underestimate hidden cases in other districts.

I'm not convinced that focusing solely on numbers helps; we also need stories from affected families to understand the real impact.

Local health centers should prioritize quick diagnostic testing and community education campaigns to spot Lassa fever cases early and limit spread.
