Trump Declares Iran Hostilities Over to Bypass War Powers Deadline

Trump Declares Iran Hostilities Over to Bypass War Powers Deadline

President Trump has informed Congress that hostilities with Iran have ended. He argues a shaky ceasefire in early April paused the 60-day War Powers Resolution clock and rendered the May 1 deadline moot. In his letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator Chuck Grassley, Trump said the conflict that began in February 2026 has terminated. He warned, however, that U.S. forces would remain in the region to secure lasting peace. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth maintains the ceasefire stops the countdown, even as the Navy blocks Iranian tankers. Republican lawmakers are split over whether to enforce the War Powers Resolution, while some insist the 60-day requirement is mandatory.

Do you think Trump's claim that a shaky April ceasefire paused the War Powers clock holds up legally?

That April ceasefire, shaky as it was, likely counts as a pause under War Powers rules.

I guess there's merit to arguing that pause did reset deadlines, but I'd want to see stronger legal justification first.

It seems odd that the president would declare an end to hostilities without congressional approval, then call the deadline irrelevant.

I'm not convinced a shaky ceasefire should reset a strict legal timeline; this feels like a stretch in separation of powers.

Congress could challenge the letter through a resolution or seek clarification on whether hostilities truly paused under the War Powers Resolution.
