Why I Believe Delegate Primaries Are Nigeria’s Best Option for Now
I watched several APC primaries recently and saw how direct primaries descended into chaos. At some venues, fewer than 50 people were present yet officials claimed 6,000 accredited voters. That kind of figure-manufacturing destroys any credibility in the process. Despite its flaws, the delegate system still offers order and accountability. Delegates may be chosen by party leaders, but once inside, each has a vote and can’t be ignored. Until INEC and parties enforce proper accreditation and transparency, direct primaries will remain open to fraud. For now, the delegate model is the lesser evil.
