Intelligence: Northern Terrorists Flee to South-East and South-South via Forest Corridors

Security and intelligence sources report that terrorists dislodged from Zamfara and Sokoto are relocating to the South-East and South-South. They use interconnected forest paths and river routes through Niger, Kogi and Anambra states to evade military operations in the North. A retired Army General identified the Niger River corridor in eastern Kogi as a central transit hub. Officers of the DSS traced routes linking forests in Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Oyo, Ondo and Ekiti states, extending into Edo State and beyond. Recent threats triggered the closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo, Edo State, after credible intelligence of kidnap plots. Insurgents are shifting from ransom demands to high-profile prisoner swaps, targeting mass abductions of schoolchildren and other civilians. State security agencies in Anambra, Imo and Abia maintain there are no northern terrorist camps in their forests. They emphasize joint patrols, strategic checkpoints and community vigilance to guard against potential infiltration.

How serious is the threat when terrorists use those forest corridors to relocate into the South-East and South-South?

For sure, those forest routes pose real security risks if militants slip into southern zones.

These forest and river routes seem surprisingly well-organized, making me wonder if local authorities really grasp the scale of the challenge.

I'm not convinced these reports mean an immediate threat; terrain limits and patrol checkpoints could still hamper any large-scale relocation.

Local leaders should coordinate with security forces to map those forest corridors and set up community-based early warning networks along critical river paths.
