5 African Nations Named to Honor Influential Leaders
Country names often reflect history, geography or culture. Yet some African nations carry the names of individuals who have passed away. These five countries are named to honor notable figures from their past. Eswatini was named for King Mswati II, who ruled from 1840 to 1868 and doubled the kingdom’s territory. Mauritius took its name from Prince Maurice of Nassau when Dutch explorers arrived in the late 16th century. Mozambique derives its name from the Arab trader Mussa Bin Bique, remembered as a respected Islamic scholar. The Seychelles were renamed in memory of Finance Minister Jean Moreau de Séchelles under Louis XV. São Tomé and Príncipe recall Saint Thomas, after whose feast day the islands were discovered, and Prince Afonso of Portugal, a royal favorite. Each of these names preserves a link to the leaders and explorers who shaped these nations.
