Cross River Taskforce Seals Unlicensed Maternity Clinic After Patient Dies

Cross River Taskforce Seals Unlicensed Maternity Clinic After Patient Dies

Cross River’s Health Quality and Anti-Quackery Taskforce has closed Safe Hands Maternity Clinic in Calabar Municipality after a patient died following surgery. The facility, housed in a converted three-bedroom apartment, lacked licensed nursing personnel and proper medical licences. Inspectors discovered surgeries performed under unsafe conditions by a visiting doctor, operations beyond the clinic’s approved scope, and an abandoned stroke patient. The taskforce also noted missing patient registers, inadequate ventilation, poor sanitation, and unsafe waste disposal. Taskforce chair Dan Abubakar warned that unaccredited clinics are "potential death traps." He urged residents to seek care at newly upgraded government health centres, which meet the state’s standards for safe and well-equipped medical services.

True, communities can form watchdog groups, report unlicensed clinics early, work with local health authorities to verify licenses and staff credentials.

It's surprising that such a makeshift facility operated for so long without any formal inspections catching the lack of licensed nursing staff.

Closing the clinic after a death seems more like reactionary enforcement instead of proactive steps to protect patients from dangerous quackery from the start.

Local health workers should coordinate with authorities to verify licences regularly and educate expectant mothers on how to check clinic credentials.
