Performance Over Identity: How Nigerians Should Rate Our Leaders
I believe one of our biggest challenges in Nigerian governance is the system that rewards electioneering over effective leadership. Politicians spend much of their first term gearing up for re-election rather than focusing on security, infrastructure, and economic growth. I recall discussing President Jonathan’s performance in 2015 and expecting the same judgement when Buhari fell short. Yet ethnic and religious loyalties often trump measurable outcomes. Leaders can underperform yet retain support, making accountability impossible. Our democracy only strengthens when citizens demand results above relationships. If we reserve second terms for those who deliver real progress, we shift the focus from identity politics to genuine governance.
