Tuchel Fires Back at Trump After England’s World Cup Semi-Final Collapse

Tuchel Fires Back at Trump After England’s World Cup Semi-Final Collapse — 1 of 3
1 / 3

England boss Thomas Tuchel has hit back at former US President Donald Trump after the latter criticised his defensive tactics following the Three Lions’ World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina. Tuchel defended his decision to “park the bus” in the final stages, insisting that defending in a deep block was the only option once Argentina turned up the pressure. He challenged the idea of using Trump as a tactical expert, saying, “You use Donald Trump as your witness? We defend as a ten and as an eleven. And if we are pushed back to a deep block, everyone defends.” Speaking at a Miami press conference ahead of the third-place play-off against France, the 52-year-old coach accepted full responsibility for the defeat. “If it’s easier for someone to take the blame, I take it. But there is no one else to blame – that pain is ours to carry.”

With Trump calling him out, do you think parking the bus was the right call for England in those dying minutes?

How much weight do you think Trump's public criticism carried in England's decision to defend so deeply?

Tuchel's rebuttal to Trump reads more like deflecting criticism than addressing tactical shortcomings in the semi-final loss.

I understand defending your choices, but clinging to such a deep block instead of pushing forward feels like surrendering momentum.

Perhaps England should refine their transition drills so they can stay compact defensively without sacrificing attacking options at the end.
