Analyst and Radio Callers Reject Senate Leader’s Six-Year Single Tenure Plan
Public affairs analyst Bayo Ayanga and callers on Eagle 102.5 FM’s Frontline programme opposed Senator Opeyemi Bamidele’s proposal to introduce a non-renewable six-year term for the president and state governors. They argued that extending tenure distracts from urgent challenges like insecurity and economic hardship. Callers cited former leaders who delivered within four years and insisted that poor governance and lack of accountability, not term length, fuel Nigeria’s problems. Ayanga recalled that former President Goodluck Jonathan floated a similar five-year single term idea in 2012. He noted that limiting terms does not guarantee better outcomes without transparency and strong oversight. Senator Bamidele defended the proposal as a way to reduce re-election distractions and said it forms part of a broader reform agenda to promote transparency in public service remuneration.
