Soludo’s Urban Renewal: Over 500 Illegal Structures in Nnewi to Be Demolished

Soludo’s Urban Renewal: Over 500 Illegal Structures in Nnewi to Be Demolished — 1 of 4
1 / 4

The Anambra State Government has begun issuing demolition notices to more than 500 owners of illegal, dilapidated, and unsafe buildings across Nnewi. This marks the first phase of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s urban renewal programme, led by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development. Structures targeted for removal include shanties under power lines, buildings without approved setbacks, unauthorized developments, filling stations, hotels, and properties encroaching on public right-of-way. Major corridors such as the Nnewi Triangle axis, Hundred Foot Road, and the Nnewi–Owerri Road right-of-way are among the locations earmarked for enforcement. Officials have given affected owners a two-week ultimatum to comply before demolition begins. The exercise aims to restore public safety, improve infrastructure, and pave the way for modern facilities like the long-abandoned Nnewi Triangle Mall, new bus terminals, and recreational centres.

What criteria did the state use to identify these 500 structures, and how will they prioritize which buildings get demolished first?

That makes sense, we really need clarity on what measures they applied and how they'll rank buildings for demolition.

I've noticed demolition campaigns often stall halfway due to funding or legal disputes, so I'm curious if this phase will really wrap up on schedule.

Razing hundreds of buildings seems extreme without offering owners viable relocation or renovation support first.

They should publish a clear timeline and collaborate with local communities to handle grievances and ensure smooth execution.
