Edo Police Command Arrests Officers, Civilians in Extortion Syndicate

Six serving officers and three civilians have been arrested by the Edo State Police Command for alleged abduction, harassment and extortion. Those detained include an Assistant Superintendent of Police, two inspectors, a dismissed corporal, two commercial bus drivers and a POS operator. They are accused of using police uniforms and equipment to trick and intimidate victims. The operation followed public complaints, sustained surveillance and technical intelligence. Serving officers are now facing internal disciplinary trials before being arraigned in court. The State Commissioner of Police has warned merchants and POS operators against colluding with corrupt officers and urged any victims of the syndicate to come forward with information.

I saw the report about officers and civilians arrested for extortion in Edo. How widespread do you think such syndicates are across other states?

Absolutely, extortion rings like these probably stretch beyond Edo. Other states likely face similar issues too.

True, this kind of extortion probably isn't limited to Edo, but I doubt it's that widespread everywhere.

It's odd that an Assistant Superintendent was involved; this points to deeper systemic issues within the command rather than isolated acts.

I get the outrage, but haven't we seen similar crackdowns before that didn't lead to real change? This alone won't fix police corruption.

Community watchdog groups should document every extortion attempt and share evidence with independent investigators for greater transparency and accountability.
