Katsina Court Sentences Two Men to 20 Years for Terrorism and Arms Trafficking

Katsina Court Sentences Two Men to 20 Years for Terrorism and Arms Trafficking

The Nigeria Police Force secured the conviction of two men for terrorism-related offences in Katsina State. They were found guilty of unlawful possession and transportation of prohibited firearms, terrorism financing and acts preparatory to terrorism. Officers intercepted the suspects along the Ingawa–Karkarku Road during an operation in September 2025. They recovered a PKT machine gun, 230 rounds of PKT ammunition, 1,663 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and the vehicle used to transport the weapons. The Federal High Court in Katsina arraigned the men on five counts under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Firearms Act. After reviewing witness testimony and material exhibits, the court found both defendants guilty on all counts. Each man received a five-year term on the first count and 20 years on each of the remaining counts. The Inspector-General of Police commended the investigative team and reiterated the Force’s commitment to combating terrorism and curbing illicit arms proliferation.

It seems surprising that increased patrols didn't catch these suspects earlier, given the magnitude of prohibited arms movement in that region.

While harsh sentences serve as deterrents, focusing solely on punishment overlooks the root causes of terrorism and arms trafficking.

Local communities and police need regular forums to share intelligence and raise awareness, making it harder for traffickers to operate unnoticed.
