MURIC Urges South-West Governors to Empower Amotekun and OPC Against Kidnapping

MURIC Urges South-West Governors to Empower Amotekun and OPC Against Kidnapping

Muslim Rights Concern has called on South-West governors to immediately equip and fund the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun), O’dua Peoples Congress (OPC) and other local vigilante groups. The appeal follows a wave of abductions in the region, including the recent kidnapping of 39 students and seven teachers in Oriire LGA, Oyo State. MURIC stressed the urgency of recruiting more personnel and supplying necessary resources for swift response. Drawing on guidance from the Qur’an, the group encouraged both Yoruba Muslims and Christians to stand firm against bandits and meet criminal force with equal resolve. MURIC also recommended that state governments officially designate these vigilante groups as first responders to curb kidnapping and other violent crimes.

I agree, boosting Amotekun and OPC capacities can create stronger deterrence and faster response to kidnapping threats in the Southwest.

Funding local vigilante groups without proper oversight might risk human rights abuses or misuse of resources in the long term.
