Hjulmand Slams Arsenal’s ‘Boring’ Tactics After Champions League Exit

Hjulmand Slams Arsenal’s ‘Boring’ Tactics After Champions League Exit — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand didn’t hold back after his side bowed out of the Champions League quarter-finals with a goalless draw at the Emirates. Arsenal reached the semi-finals for the second year running by protecting their 1-0 first-leg advantage. Sporting’s best moment came when Geny Catamo struck the post, but they struggled to build sustained pressure. Hjulmand pointed to the constant stoppages and low intensity as the main culprits. He argued that frequent interruptions, especially around set-pieces, robbed his team of any rhythm and made the match “boring.” "If I was a viewer, 0-0 and a 1-0 first leg doesn't show our side," he said. Despite creating chances when they found a flow, Sporting couldn’t do enough to overturn the tie.

What do you think caused Arsenal's cautious approach at the Emirates despite their first-leg lead?

Could their injury concerns or fixture congestion have played a bigger role in that defensive setup?

It's hard to credit that goalless draw purely to defensive tactics when Sporting hardly troubled the goalkeeper.

Sure, some fans call it boring, but protecting a slim advantage can be smart football strategy.

Next time Sporting might need to take more risks up front if they want to break down teams like Arsenal.
