Facing Palpitations Two Years After Quitting Drugs – Doctor Won’t Investigate

Facing Palpitations Two Years After Quitting Drugs – Doctor Won’t Investigate

I quit meth, weed and benzodiazepines two years ago but still suffer uncomfortable heart palpitations and elevated heart rate from simple triggers like bowel movements, blood sugar spikes or indigestion. My doctor refuses to order a follow-up echocardiogram, insisting these symptoms began with drug withdrawal. I’ve also noticed tightness in my right shoulder and hip flexors, a numb right limb and persistent bloating that worsens the palpitations. I’m considering a private hospital for further testing to find out if long-term substance use has caused lasting heart damage. Any advice on next steps or specialists to see would be appreciated.

Has anyone else here experienced ongoing palpitations years after quitting drugs, and what ultimately prompted your doctor to run more tests?

Are these palpitations constant, or do they flare up under stress or certain activities?

I don't think past drug use alone explains palpitations—doctors often need fresh symptoms or test results before deeper investigations.

It seems surprising that a doctor would refuse any follow-up echocardiogram given persistent palpitations after substance cessation.

Maybe your palpitations tie back more to stress or sugar fluctuations than to a heart defect, so an echo might not reveal much.

You might record your heart rate during episodes with a simple fitness tracker, then share that log with a different cardiologist for a second opinion.
