Nigerian-Born Defender Ime Okon Earns Spot in South Africa’s 2026 World Cup Squad
Ime Okon, the 22-year-old defender with a Nigerian father and South African mother, has been named in South Africa’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Okon currently plays for Bundesliga side Hannover 96 and has already won five caps for the former African champions. Head coach Hugo Broos has also handed first tournament call-ups to Olwethu Makhanya and Bradley Cross as Bafana Bafana prepare for their first World Cup since hosting in 2010. The squad features 19 players based in the South African league alongside stars plying their trade in Europe and the USA.
