High Court Remands Six Alleged Coup Plotters in DSS Custody, Adjourns Trial to April 27, 2026

High Court Remands Six Alleged Coup Plotters in DSS Custody, Adjourns Trial to April 27, 2026

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered six defendants accused of plotting against President Bola Tinubu to remain in the custody of the Department of State Services. Their terrorism-related trial is now set to begin on April 27, 2026. At Wednesday’s hearing, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik emphasised the right of each defendant to consult with legal counsel. An interpreter was brought in after one defendant noted he only understood Arabic and Hausa. When proceedings resumed, all six pleaded not guilty to a 13-count charge filed by the Attorney-General of the Federation. The prosecution’s request for an accelerated hearing and continued detention was granted, while defence lawyers signalled plans to seek bail. Among the accused are retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmus Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Kashim Goni and Abdulkadir Sani. A former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, is also named but remains at large.

Prolonged remand can spark doubts about fairness, but might it also reflect thorough case preparation rather than a breakdown of due process?

It seems unusual that a terrorism-related case would be adjourned for nearly three years before trial actually begins.

It might help to follow official court records directly, rather than relying solely on media reports for accurate updates.
