Ex-Governor El-Rufai Arraigned in Kaduna Under Tight Security, Press Denied Entry

Ex-Governor El-Rufai Arraigned in Kaduna Under Tight Security, Press Denied Entry

Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai arrived at the Federal High Court in Kaduna on Tuesday morning under heavy security. He was escorted from a Hilux vehicle into a courtroom after spending 30 minutes inside a protective cordon. Journalists who arrived before 7:00 a.m. were barred from entry by DSS operatives. Security was bolstered around the old Nigerian Defence Academy. Officers from the DSS, Nigeria Police, Mobile Police and NSCDC formed roadblocks, restricting vehicular movement from Ungwan Sarki through Kawo and causing traffic delays. The ICPC will arraign El-Rufai alongside Joel Adoga on charges of conversion of public property and money laundering (FHC/KD/73/2026) on March 24, 2026. A separate state court case (KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26) names El-Rufai and Amadu Sule for abuse of office, fraud and conferring undue advantage. The date for that arraignment will be announced later.

How will the denial of press entry shape public perception of El-Rufai's arraignment and the court's transparency?

Not sure this will shift views much. Many focus more on outcome than media access in high-security cases.

Heavy security around a former governor seems over the top, but maybe they expected protest or security risks at the courthouse.

Some are quick to blame the administration, but strict security isn't exclusive to El-Rufai's case; other high-profile defendants get similar treatment.

Journalists should coordinate arrival times and verify entry permissions in advance to avoid being locked out of future high-profile trials.
