Ex-Governor Yari Accused of Undermining Development After ₦4bn Gold Seizure
A civil society group says former Zamfara governor Abdul'aziz Yari played a role in illegal mining that has deprived Nigeria of revenue. The Coalition for Accountability and National Development praised the EFCC’s interception of an aircraft carrying gold worth about ₦4 billion allegedly linked to the senator. The group warned that illicit exploitation and smuggling of gold have starved critical sectors like infrastructure, healthcare and education of needed funds. It commended security agencies for their vigilance and urged them to pursue all individuals involved without fear or favour. CAND also highlighted the environmental damage and security risks posed by illegal mining in the North-West. It called on regulators to strengthen monitoring, formalise artisanal mining and deploy modern technology to protect Nigeria’s mineral wealth.
