Power and Principle: The Awolowo–Obasanjo Showdown
Obafemi Awolowo built systems. He championed education, economic planning and accountable governance. To him, leadership meant transformation, not survival. Olusegun Obasanjo came from the barracks. He relied on command, hierarchy and control. He valued stability over ideological purity and managed power to preserve the status quo. The real clash unfolded during the 1976–1979 transition from military to civilian rule. As Head of State, Obasanjo steered the process toward continuity. Awolowo’s reform agenda lacked the alliances to break the old order. This was more than a personal battle. It was two philosophies: one pushing for deep change, the other securing manageable stability. Nigeria chose continuity, and that choice still shapes our politics today.
