Return to Politics Could Undermine Jonathan’s Legacy, Analysts Warn
Political analyst Prince Francis Chilaka has cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan against re-entering the presidential race, warning that such a move could erode the elder statesman image he has cultivated since 2015. Speaking on a national current affairs programme, he stated, “If Jonathan makes that mistake of coming back, everything he has built so far will be thrown to the gutters.” Chilaka argued that Jonathan’s peaceful concession in 2015 and his role as a respected African statesman underpin his current reputation. A return to partisan politics, he said, could undo years of international goodwill and dilute his moral standing. The discussion followed the Nigeria Democratic Congress convention in Abuja, where the party zoned its 2027 ticket to the South and signalled possible alliances. Other analysts debated long-term zoning strategies and the ruling party’s incumbency advantage ahead of the next general election.
