APC Chairman Praises Wike: What It Says About Nigeria’s Democracy
You know democracy is in trouble when the ruling party’s own chairman hails an opposition leader as ‘tireless’. At the June 23 flag-off in the FCT, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda praised PDP’s Nyesom Wike and even said he’d like to recruit him. Wike still calls himself PDP, but he’s commissioning APC projects and enjoying strong support from the ruling party. Wike’s Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State now unites PDP, APC, Labour Party and Action Alliance under one roof. In practice, that coalition has blurred the lines between government and opposition. This public merger highlights a deeper problem: healthy competition has given way to political transactions and alliances that undermine true checks and balances.
