Why We Struggle to See Our Own Progress—and How to Change That

Why We Struggle to See Our Own Progress—and How to Change That — 1 of 5
1 / 5

I used to feel confused whenever someone said, “I’m proud of you.” They meant my achievements, but I only saw unfinished goals. While others celebrated milestones, I was already thinking of the next challenge. This isn’t just me. Many young women grow up praised for potential, not for small wins. We learn to tie our value to future success and miss the growth we’ve already made. Social media and hustle culture make it worse. We see constant flashbulb moments online and end up comparing our everyday wins to others’ highlight reels. We focus on what’s next instead of what we’ve done. Acknowledging your progress doesn’t weaken ambition. It simply means pausing to notice how far you’ve come today. Small victories build confidence and propel us toward the next goal with more gratitude and resilience.

It seems like praising potential without celebrating results can set us up to overlook real achievements.

I'm not convinced that pausing for every little milestone actually motivates us; sometimes pushing straight ahead feels more energizing than looking back.

Try creating a simple progress journal where you record each step you complete and review it weekly to acknowledge how far you've come.
