Report Warns: 60% of Nigerian Graduates Not Job-Ready, Employers Say
Nearly six in ten employers in Nigeria say graduates lack the skills needed for today’s workplaces. This finding highlights a growing gap between academic training and industry expectations. Proten International’s report reveals that over 55% of graduates end up working in roles unrelated to their field of study. It also identifies critical shortfalls in teamwork, communication, technical know-how and digital literacy. Deborah Yemi-Oladayo, Managing Director of Proten International, urges curriculum updates and stronger lecturer training. She warns that expecting improved student outcomes without equipping educators is unrealistic. Experts recommend that students take charge of their own development by building soft skills, seeking internships and tapping free online training. Practical experience, they say, accelerates learning and eases the transition into employment.
