How a Foiled 1966 Bomb Plot at University of Ibadan Sparked Mass Ibo Evictions
In late 1966, security staff at the University of Ibadan stopped a truck loaded with dynamite. The driver intended to detonate a major bomb on campus. He claimed his actions were in protest against the dismissal of Ibo lecturers and staff. Earlier that year, the Ibo vice-chancellor had paid six months’ salaries in advance and urged them to return east. The man was neither a student nor staff. After the plot was foiled, the military governor ordered all Ibo civilians to leave the Western region. This incident followed rising ethnic tensions across the regions.
