Anambra SASA Arrests Three for Extorting Traders in Onitsha

Anambra SASA Arrests Three for Extorting Traders in Onitsha — 1 of 4
1 / 4

By Sunshine Iwunna The Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA) has stepped up operations against illegal levies in Onitsha, Anambra State. Agents arrested Michael Uwaoma at Mgbuka Obosi for collecting ₦200 from food vendors and Ndubuisi Aniukwu at Umusiome Junction, Nkpor, for demanding ₦300 from motorcycle riders. Investigations linked both to Anthony Onyekwelu, who allegedly required daily remittances of ₦20,000. All three suspects were arraigned before a magistrate court. They were remanded pending trial and granted bail under strict conditions: ₦100,000 bail, a ₦300,000 fine, and a Level 10 civil servant as surety. The court set the next hearing for June 3, 2026 and warned that failure to meet bail terms would extend detention. SASA reiterated its commitment to ending illegal revenue collection and urged residents to report any extortion attempts. Illegal gains may promise quick profit, but they bring disgrace and legal consequences.

It seems enforcement targets small food vendors, but nothing mentions tackling larger networks behind these illegal collections.

Traders should document any illegal levy attempts and report promptly to SASA or local authorities for faster response.
