When Respect Fades: The Erosion of Our Traditional Values
Growing up, our families, neighbors, and churches taught us respect, accountability, and modesty. Today, many of these lessons seem to be slipping away, and the next generation may face serious consequences if we do nothing. Sudden wealth once prompted careful questioning of its source. Now, flashy purchases by teens are celebrated as blessings, and relatives often demand “taps” instead of accountability. Courtesy toward elders used to be non-negotiable, but some young people now consider basic greetings optional. Choosing friends of good character was once a matter of family pride, and parents ensured discipline at home and school. Now, boundaries have blurred as parents side with undisciplined children and friendships with questionable peers go unchallenged. Technology and social media have amplified these changes. Children get smartphones in primary school and face unfiltered content. Emergencies and private moments are filmed for clicks rather than compassion, and church services sometimes resemble entertainment more than worship.
