COOU Council Dismisses Leading VC Hopeful and Four Lecturers Amid Governance Row

COOU Council Dismisses Leading VC Hopeful and Four Lecturers Amid Governance Row

Prof. Chike Osegbue, a frontrunner for the Vice Chancellor position at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, was dismissed by the University Council chaired by Prof. Peter Onwualu. Four other academics were also sacked for reasons ranging from misconduct to abandonment of duties. The new governing council, inaugurated by Visitor Governor Chukwuma Soludo on June 11, took its first major action in this move. Osegbue is currently in court challenging the appointment of the present Vice Chancellor, arguing she did not meet the selection criteria. Two law faculty professors, C. C. Nwabachili and Ifeoma Kakulu, were removed for gross misconduct. In the Department of Microbiology, Dr. I. H. Iheukwumere and Mr. Emeka Nwabunnia were dismissed following allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation. The council also promoted 13 Readers to full professorship. Chairman Onwualu congratulated them and urged the new professors to justify the confidence placed in their promotions.
