Ukraine’s Drone Campaign Drives Record Russian Casualties in March
Recent reports show Russian soldier losses in Ukraine hit a new high in March, with 35,351 casualties—a 29% rise from February. Drones accounted for 96% of these losses, while artillery and small arms fire caused the rest. Ukrainian officials backed these figures with video evidence. Moscow’s recruitment push is falling short of its target of 409,000 contract soldiers this year. In the first quarter, Russia averaged 940 recruits per day, below the needed 1,120. This shortfall could leave up to 65,000 positions unfilled. Ukraine’s “I Want to Live” initiative, which aids Russian troops who wish to surrender, underlines this manpower gap. Territorial gains by Russian forces have also slowed. The Institute for the Study of War reports daily advances of 5.5 square kilometers in 2026, down from 10.66 in mid-2025 and 14.9 at the end of 2024. President Zelenskyy says Russia’s recent ceasefire demand aims to shield its forces from further heavy losses and force Ukrainian withdrawals in Donetsk. Ukraine now aims for more than 50,000 Russian casualties each month to degrade enemy strength irreversibly.
